Portage County WI - Museums and Other Attractions

If you're looking for something interesting to do in Portage County, here are some ideas to get you started.

Portage County includes the city of Stevens Point, the village of Plover, and several smaller communities. Local flavor can be found in abundance, as well as offerings afforded to us by having the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point right here.

Here are some things to see and do while you are visiting the Stevens Point area and Portage County.

The Portage County Historical Society Museums

  • Heritage Park- a preserve of 3 acres in Plover. Currently 10 buildings and a GB&W caboose #117.

  • Synagogue Museum - a piece of the Jewish community that once thrived in Stevens Point.

  • Rising Star Mill - Located in Nelsonville, built ca. 1860.

  • University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point

  • Museum of Natural History - From the Menominee clan to the African Savannah, and even including a life-sized model of a dinosaur skeleton, this museum will pique the interest of any visitor.

  • Allen F. Blocher Planetarium - Public showings bring the night sky to life inside the dome.

  • Other Portage County Attractions

  • Central Wisconsin Children's Museum - a family discovery place located in the CenterPoint Market Place

  • Riverfront Arts Center - varying art exhibits, located on the river near downtown Stevens Point.
